In 2010, he helped secure more than $5 million dollars to fund the creation of Boston’s bike share program
Mayoral candidate and At-Large Boston City Councilor John Connolly is calling for an expedited hearing to discuss Boston's bicycling infrastructure, particularly two projects. "There are cycle tracks capital projects being discussed, one at the Public Garden and the other on Malcolm X Boulevard," Connolly said during Wednesday's weekly Boston City Council meeting. Connolly said growing Boston's cycling infrastructure is good for public health and economic development and has the benefit of the established Hubway bike share program. Connolly said many of his colleagues had already taken active roles in promoting bicycling in Boston through previous initiaves. Specifically, Connolly said the Boston Cyclists Union, as well as other city …

Google Maps has an image of Michael Flaherty's '09 campaign at mayoral candidate John Connolly's new Roslindale Campaign Headquarters on Belgrade Avenue.
Mayoral candidate and At-Large City Councilor John Connolly is opening a new campaign headquarters at 162 Belgrade Ave., in Roslindale - but according to Google's streetview, the location is taken by Michael Flaherty's 2009 mayoral campaign. Connolly laughed when told about it, "I'll see if I can get the Google satellites to update the picture." West Roxbury Patch tweeted about the new campaign location, which Ryan O. Ferguson, tweeted back about the current Google streetview for the location: "Streetview has Flaherty for Mayor 09 sign!#badjuju RT @WestRoxPatch: John Connolly opening campaign office|162 Belgrade Av #bospoli #mapoli" Asked whether it was bad luck? Connolly retorted, "No. We had it in 2011 and we won. We changed the luck on …

Who taught John Connolly more about politics? His mother or father?
Boston mayoral candidate and current At-Large City Councilor John Connolly fielded questions from Patch about running a campaign during a tragedy, Boston Public Schools assignment plan, and how his mother influenced him more in politics than his father. Patch: First – how are you, your family and friends after the recent tragic events in and around Boston? Connolly: My family like so many of us from Boston are still in a state of shock and also incredibly thankful for the amazing job the first responders and law enforcement did. We're also really grieving for all the victims. I don’t think this is the type of thing that is going to fade away. I think we’re all going to carry parts of this for the rest of our lives. Patch: How has that …

District 6 City Councilor Matt O'Malley says he would sacrifice himself if he, John Connolly and Michael Ross, were falling off a cliff and he could save both of them.
District 6 City Councilor Matt O'Malley, representing West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, parts of Roslindale and Mission Hill, talked about his endorsement of John Connolly for Boston mayor, his food preferences, and delicious Boston tap water with Patch. Patch: You endorsed At-Large City Councilor John Connolly for Boston mayor? O'Malley: Correct. Patch: But now your fellow colleagues Felix Arroyo, Rob Consalvo and Michael Ross are all running to be the next Boston mayor – did you endorse too soon? O'Malley: No. I think this is among the most important elections of my lifetime and many Bostonians' lifetime. Tom Menino will go down as one of the greatest mayors in Boston’s history and whomever follows him will have enormous shoes to fill. I …

Elected officials from Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury, and Roslindale, endorsed John Connolly for Boston mayor at a brief public event Thursday.
With the mayoral race’s plot thickening, John Connolly aligned himself with elected officials in his neighborhood at a sparsely-attended event Thursday. Mayoral candidate John Connolly, an at-large member of the Boston City Council, spoke to members of the media, handlers and a dozen onlookers in front of West Roxbury Library Thursday afternoon in an attempt to show strength in West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain and Roslindale, also known as the Parkway communities of Boston, named for the VFW Parkway. Flanked by District 6 City Councilor Matt O’Malley from Jamaica Plain, state Rep Ed Coppinger, D-West Roxbury, and West Roxbury resident and Boston School Committee member Mary Tamer, Connolly continued to push his campaign’s platform of Boston …

The 6th annual St. Patrick's Day weekend street hockey event is taking place today in the Temple Street neighborhood.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is scheduled to attend today's 6th annual Shamrock Shootout in West Roxbury. While Boston Mayor Thomas Menino hasn't declared whether he'll be seeking re-election - the Temple Street area, where the shootout takes place - is a big John Connolly neighborhood. Connolly, an at-large city councilor, announced his mayoral candidacy earlier this month, lives in West Roxbury. Connolly has hammered the Menino administration on the recent student assignment plan, calling it "a lost opportunity for our children". And the Shamrock Shootout will be packed with families with elementary-aged children. The Shamrock Shootout begins at 10:30 a.m. at Temple and Sherbrook streets in West Roxbury. So is this a campaign move for …

City councilor John Connolly announced his candidacy for mayor of Boston on Tuesday.
At-Large Boston City Councilor John Connolly announced on Tueday morning he will run for mayor of Boston this year, regardless of whether or not current Mayor Thomas Menino decides to run. Connolly said he respects Menino and his service to Boston, but noted he thought it's time for a change in leadership. "I've worked with [Menino] and I've learned from him, however, this campaign is about Boston's future, and the need for new ideas, new energy and a new resolve for Boston to reach its full potential." Connolly said the way to ensure the future success of the city of Boston is to invest in its public schools to completely transform them into high-performing schools. "The success of our schools directly impacts our ability to create …
City Councilor John Connolly on Tuesday announced his campaign for mayor. Current Mayor Tom Menino, meanwhile, has remained mum about whether he'll run for another term. If these two Boston powerhouses were matched up in the fall, who'd get your vote?
At the very least, it'll be interesting. Boston City Councilor John Connolly threw his hat into the ring Tuesday and announced his candidacy for mayor. Connolly, a city councilor since 2007, has been raising money at an accelerated clip, according to the Globe. That money haul and speculative tweet made this the worst kept secret in the city. Menino, on the other hand, is no shrinking violet, either. A prolonged illness late last year led to speculation that the longest-serving mayor in city history would step down at the end of this term. The Globe notes, however, that a return to health has led to whispers among the cognoscenti that Menino will run again. What do you think? Should Menino run again? Does Connolly have the political …

John Connolly is announcing his mayoral candidacy today.
Boston City Councilor John Connolly is announcing he is running for mayor today. "I'm running for Mayor because Boston should be the first city in America to transform urban public schools and offer every child a world-class education. We all need our Boston Public Schools to work because great schools lead to safe and healthy neighborhoods," wrote Connolly on his campaign website. Connolly, from West Roxbury, is in his third term, and is announcing his mayoral candidacy at the corner of Warren and Cambridge streets, in Brighton at 11 a.m. today. A former teacher and father of two young children, Connolly said he will focus on bringing "change to Boston Public Schools and to bring new ideas and new energy to the challenges facing the …

Boston City Councilor Connolly says the student assignment plans for Boston still fall short in several important areas.
On Monday night the External Advisory Committee on Student Assignment is slated to recommend a new assignment model to the Superintendent and School Committee. After nearly a year of work, the models put forth by the district for the EAC's consideration still fall short in a several areas. In October, a coalition of six elected officials put forth the Quality Choice Plan as a comprehensive model that addresses the issue of uneven quality across the city as an integral part of the creation of a new assignment model. Over 7,000 Bostonians signed onto the plan and, as this process comes to a conclusion, their voices must be heard. There are a few key elements that should be included in the final recommendation to the School Committee. A …
