Catholic Memorial's Gorman Drafted by Boston Red Sox

BC-bound and Gatorade Massachusetts Baseball Player of the Year drafted 1,522nd by hometown team.

Catholic Memorial's John Gorman's high school career was capped today after he was drafted 1,522nd by the hometown Boston Red Sox, according the Boston Herald. Gorman is expected to attend Boston College, which is what knocked him way down on draft boards. The 6-foot 2-inch Norwood resident had a terrific high school baseball career complete with multiple no-hitters, ace performances on the mound, and accolades topped by being named the Gatorade Massachusetts Baseball Player of the Year.  The Knights were eliminated this week in the MIAA playoffs by BC High, 3-0, in the South Sectional Quarterfinals. Gorman struck out eight in as many innings, walking just two (one intentionally), but took the tough loss. The pitcher/third baseman hopes to…

BC High Ends Catholic Memorial's Season

Knights fall 3-0 in South Sectional Quarterfinals.

Maybe it was fitting that in a game such highly-hyped, with two Division 1-bound pitchers dueling on the mound locked in a scoreless tie, with both teams sporting 15-6 records and state title aspirations, that one bad bounce could make a big difference in the contest. That's what happened when a ground ball hit by BC High junior outfielder and number nine hitter Jack Buckley took a wild hop right in front of Catholic Memorial shortstop Shane O'Leary, bounding into centerfield and scoring the Eagles' first run of the game on Monday afternoon. The Eagles, behind ace pitcher Donny Murray, went on to win 3-0, vanquishing the Knights from state tournament play. "It makes it more frustrating that the first run scored, came on a ball that bounced…

CM's Gorman, Winner of Gatorade Massachusetts Player of the Year Award, Focusing on Team Goals

Boston College-bound pitcher/third baseman focusing on team goals as Catholic Memorial moves forward in the tournament.

There are a number of ways to tell that John Gorman has excelled in his senior season on the Catholic Memorial baseball team that he captains. You can tell with your eyes, when you watch him on the mound, bulldogging his way through opposing lineups with a fastball in the mid-high eighties. Or when you watch him in the field, bare-handing bunts down the third base line and zipping them to first for the out. Or when you catch him at-bat, watching hard hit line drives zip off his tight, right-handed swing. Or, you can tell from his numbers, which include a 0.14 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 51 innings and a .362 batting average with one home run. You can tell it by looking back behind the CM backstop during his starts, where a handful of Major …

Meet the Knights' Standout Players

Catholic Memorial finishes up its season on Thanksgiving Day against BC High.

As the Catholic Memorial Knights prepare to finish up their 2010 football season Thursday against BC High, West Roxbury Patch is giving you capsules on some of the featured players on the talented, young squad that entertained fans on Baker Street this autumn. AJ Doyle – Doyle quarterbacks and co-captains the Knights, who have averaged 26.7 points per game, good for Division 1's fifth-highest output. Doyle's arm is strong – he's thrown 11 touchdowns and only three interceptions this season – and he's plenty capable on the run, having scored three touchdowns on the ground. Scouts consider Doyle, a junior, a potential Division 1 college quarterback. Armani Reeves – Reeves, a junior wide receiver and defensive back, pulled away this fall as …

Postseason Aspirations on the Line for Catholic Memorial Against Xaverian

It's a do-or-die contest against defending Super Bowl champs for the Knights on Senior Night Friday.

Xaverian Hawks (7-2) at Catholic Memorial Knights (5-3) Friday, Nov. 12 – 7:00 p.m. What's at stake: Everything, for Catholic Memorial. It's a do-or-die matchup. The Knights stand at 1-1 in the Catholic Conference and would be eliminated from postseason contention with a loss. Standing in their way are the Hawks, the defending Division I State Champs, who have won 20 of their last 22 games, are 2-0 in the conference, edged the Knights by two scores last season (30-28), and have retained much of the talent from their Super Bowl squad. If that pressure's not enough, Friday will be Senior Night at Catholic Memorial, meaning emotions will be high as the Knights' seniors take to the field on Baker Street for the last time. For Xaverian, a loss …

Catholic Memorial Football Falls in Final Seconds to Brockton

Knights give Boxers a good fight but surrender game-winning touchdown with seven seconds remaining in 19-18 loss.

The Catholic Memorial Knights fell just seven seconds short of pulling off a major upset against the state's No. 2 team on Friday night, ultimately losing to Brockton 19-18 at home. Brockton junior wide receiver Lucas Depina hauled in a 41-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Paul Mroz on fourth-and-nine for the Boxers' (8-1) game-winning score. After taking over with 52 seconds left in the game and trailing 18-13, Mroz led a six-play drive that culminated in the touchdown. Depina beat Knights' junior defensive back Armani Reeves to the front corner of the end zone and took to the air to haul in the deep pass. "They made one more play than we did," Knights coach Alex Campea said. "Fourth down play, they had to throw it to the end …

Catholic Memorial Football Travel To St. John's Prep Saturday

The Knights will look to build upon last week's Catholic Conference victory.

Catholic Memorial Knights (5-1, 1-0) at St. John's Prep Eagles (4-3, 0-0) Saturday October 30 - 1:00 p.m. What's at stake: The Knights last week kicked off their league schedule with a victory against Malden Catholic, thereby immediately guaranteeing themselves a better Catholic Conference record than they posted in 2009 when they went 0-4. The Knights see one last non-league competitor next week when they take on Brockton before they host defending Division I State Champion Xavarian in a game that shines on the schedule as what could, if things went well for CM, be the team's biggest game in years. To take the momentum begotten by a 2-0 league schedule into the next two weeks - particularly the Xavarian match-up - would be huge for the …

Catholic Memorial, Roxbury Latin Football Teams Set for Big Weekend Games

Knights' league schedule begins, while Foxes look to stay afloat in ISL.

Catholic Memorial Knights (4-1) at Malden Catholic Lancers (4-2) Friday, October 22  – 7:00 p.m. What's at stake: The game marks CM's first against a Catholic Conference opponent in 2010. The Knights have looked very strong this fall both on the scoreboard and in terms of pure athleticism and skill, but they bring the same 4-1 record to Malden that they boasted when the Lancers visited them in 2009. CM would finish the season 5-5, including an 0-4 record in the conference. Last year's contest was a close one that the Lancers won 28-26, barely surviving a furious  fourth quarter rally from CM. Since, MC has graduated a number of their top players – including Catholic Conference Offensive Player of the Year Quinn McDonough – while much of …
