Photos: 1st Taste of West Roxbury a Delicious Success!

The only complaint was about having bellies too full of delicious food.

Yum. What did you think of the first-ever Taste of West Roxbury? What were your favorite foods you ate at the Irish Social Club of Boston?  Everyone was impressed with the first-time event that West Roxbury Main Streets, led by Kara O'Connor, put on!  More coming on restaurant updates learned at the Taste of West Roxbury, and more on the night... The following restaurants dished out their own brand of deliciousness last night: Comella’s, Corrib Pub and Restaurant, Edible Arrangements, Himalayan Bistro, Los Amigos, Masona Grill, Porter Café, Red-Eyed Pig, Rox Diner, Spring Street Café, Just Baked, Sticky Rice Café, Sugar Bakery, The Upper Crust, Tony’s Place, West On Centre, Leanworks, Redd’s In Rozzie, MJ’s, and Amir’s Natural Foods, Al …

We had a GREAT time. We live on Park Street but had never been inside the Irish Social Club. It was a lot of fun to go to a neighborhood event, taste a wide variety of delicious food from local restaurants, and even meet Mayor Menino! We will definitely come again next year and encourage all of our neighbors to attend, too.   more ›

Porter Café Wins WRMS' Burger Wars Competition

For two weeks, nine West Roxbury restaurants competed for the title of best burger, but only one came out on top in the West Roxbury Main Streets competition.

West Roxbury’s local restaurants were in competition mode for two weeks this month, putting their best burgers on display to win West Roxbury Main Streets' Burger Wars in the neighborhood. Between March 5 and 16, nine West Roxbury restaurants participated in Burger Wars, in a West Roxbury Main Streets (WRMS) competition, an organization that promotes and enhances West Roxbury’s business district. A dollar of each burger purchased is going to WRMS' revitalization efforts. Barely a year in business, Porter Café found a creative and simplistic way to make a name for itself. Owners Dermot Loftus and Paul Murphy heard about the competition through WRMS and thought it would be a good idea to participate. Their “Classic Burger” has since gained…

Monday Marks Beginning for Burger Wars

Competition, which will benefit West Roxbury Main Streets' community revitalization efforts.

Let the games -- and the eating -- begin. West Roxbury Main Streets' Burger Wars commences today, pitting nine of West Roxbury's restaurants' burgers up against one another. The competition will run until March 16. An online poll will account for 25 percent of the vote, but otherwise the decision will be made based on West Roxbury's appetite. For every burger served, $1 will count as a vote, and will also be put towards WRMS' community revitalization efforts. The battling restaurants are: WRMS Executive Director Kara O'Connor said the event provides an opportunity to highlight the neighborhood's restaurants. December's Holiday Stroll, by contrast, focuses on retail in West Roxbury, she said. Learn more at WRMS' website.

It appears that the Real Deal is a "conscientious objector" to the burger wars. Called them last night to order their burger and they told us they had no idea what we were talking about. This could be a ploy, of course, like the Iraqi communications official who denied the US invasion as tanks rolled by him on live TV. The Red Eyed Pig, however, is taking the whole thing very seriously. They, in …   more ›

Which West Roxbury Businesses Are Using Online Coupon Sites?

West on Centre, Mobil 1 Oil Change, Masona Grill have all used sites like Groupon, Buy With Me, and Living Social.

When Manny Sifnugel felt the need to get the word out about his restaurant this past winter, he thought about putting an ad in Boston Magazine or in other area publications. He struggled with the idea, though, knowing the risks associated with traditional advertising. "Ads are no guarantee," said Sifnugel. "And ads can be expensive." Instead, the lead chef and owner of the Masona Grill turned his attention towards a new way to advertise and put a deal on the popular coupon website Groupon. Groupon, along with similar sites like Buy With Me and Living Social, offer coupons (in this case, those who signed up for the deal were able to buy $40 worth of food for $20) provided enough people sign up to buy the deal before a time limit expires. Sites like Groupon are a great as loss leaders. But Im not sure about how sustainable it is for businesses to use on an ongoing basis. Mobsav is a great platform that I feel is good for both the consumer and business. Its only available in the Chicago area now but they are expanding quickly.   more ›
