Which West Roxbury Residents are Running for Office?

Two of the biggest heavyweights in the mayor's race reside in West Roxbury - John Connoly and Dan Conley.

Numerous West Roxbury residents have submitted nomination papers for Boston's mayoral and city council races. Of the 17 candidates who submitted mayoral nomination papers, two West Roxbury residents are clearly first and second in having the most cash for their campaigns. Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley has more than $1 million cash on hand for his campaign, according to the Office of Campaign and Political Finance (OCPF); Although Conley's campaign did have more than $800,000 before he announced his mayoral candidacy.  At-Large City Councilor John Connolly has about $488K on hand, according to OCPF, who benefitted from donations due to announcing his mayoral candidacy before Mayor Thomas Menino said he would not seek …

US Senate Candidate Markey Greets Shoppers at Roche Bros in West Roxbury

Congressman and US Senate candidate Ed Markey is the Democratic candidate for the special US Senate election.

Democratic US Senate candidate Ed Markey was joined by several local political leaders in a campaign stop at Roche Bros in West Roxbury on Tuesday. While fielding media questions, the congressman would stop to greet shoppers, "Can I say hello? I'm Congressman Ed Markey." For many Parkway residents it was the first look at Markey, D-5th, who will face Republican candidate Gabriel Gomez in June 25 special state election to replace John Kerry, now the Secretary of State. Markey was joined at Roche Bros by District 6 Boston City Councilor Matt O'Malley, state Rep. Ed Coppinger, D-West Roxbury, as well as Ed Kelly, president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts. All three men endorsed Markey. "Ed's what we need in Washington …

Boston City Councilor Waits for 'Monster' to be Caught During Lockdown

District 6 City Councilor Matt O'Malley has spent the lockdown time checking media reports, seeing if friends and family are safe, and hoping for the suspect to be caught.

Gripped to media reports like the majority of Boston area residents is how Boston District 6 City Councilor Matt O'Malley is riding out the stay in shelter lockdown. "I’m sitting in my living room since 6:20 a.m. this morning watching television, waiting, hoping and praying there’s no more innocent victims," said O'Malley, who texted his staff early to let them know to stay home. He said he also received a robocall from NotifyBoston letting him know about the stay in shelter order while law officials search for one of the two bombing suspects. He said he hasn't received a briefing on the lockdown situation, and said he knows as much as anyone watching media reports. O'Malley also took to Twitter for a little tweet beef with a state rep …

O'Malley: 'We are strong. We are resilient. We are Boston.'

City Councilor Matt O'Malley ran several Boston Marathons, and said, 'It is beyond difficult to comprehend how some coward could commit the acts of today.'

The following was posted on Facebook by District 6 Boston City Councilor Matt O'Malley about the Boston Marathon explosions. In 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, and 2012 I took a right on Hereford and then a left on Boylston. After running 26 miles, seeing the finish line of the Boston Marathon ranks among the greatest feelings in the world. Last year, in fact, I videotaped the final 2/10th's of a mile and uploaded it to Youtube. I wanted to record the feeling of pure bliss. I am equally sad and angry that someone has sought to destroy that. It is beyond difficult to comprehend how some coward could commit the acts of today. To understand how someone could attempt to destroy this uniquely Boston tradition strains all credulity. This is the only …

O'Malley Sticks By Connolly, Despite Friendship with Ross, Consalvo & Arroyo

District 6 City Councilor Matt O'Malley says he would sacrifice himself if he, John Connolly and Michael Ross, were falling off a cliff and he could save both of them.

District 6 City Councilor Matt O'Malley, representing West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, parts of Roslindale and Mission Hill, talked about his endorsement of John Connolly for Boston mayor, his food preferences, and delicious Boston tap water with Patch. Patch: You endorsed At-Large City Councilor John Connolly for Boston mayor? O'Malley: Correct. Patch: But now your fellow colleagues Felix Arroyo, Rob Consalvo and Michael Ross are all running to be the next Boston mayor – did you endorse too soon? O'Malley: No. I think this is among the most important elections of my lifetime and many Bostonians' lifetime. Tom Menino will go down as one of the greatest mayors in Boston’s history and whomever follows him will have enormous shoes to fill. I …

Elected officials from Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury, and Roslindale, endorsed John Connolly for Boston mayor at a brief public event Thursday.

With the mayoral race’s plot thickening, John Connolly aligned himself with elected officials in his neighborhood at a sparsely-attended event Thursday. Mayoral candidate John Connolly, an at-large member of the Boston City Council, spoke to members of the media, handlers and a dozen onlookers in front of West Roxbury Library Thursday afternoon in an attempt to show strength in West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain and Roslindale, also known as the Parkway communities of Boston, named for the VFW Parkway. O'Malley on Menino: 'Surprised and Saddened'

District 6 City Councilor Matt O'Malley weighs in on Mayor Thomas Menino's decision to not run for re-election after 20 years in office.

Mayor Thomas Menino, Boston's longest standing mayor, will not run for office this November. As the Hub's mayor for 20 years, he leaves behind a legacy with the city's citizens and with city councilors. District 6 councilor Matt O'Malley, who represents West Roxbury, and has served on the council since 2010, said he was "surprised and saddened" by Menino's decision. "This is a guy who has been the mayor since I was in the eighth grade," he said. "He served with distrinction and honor. I don’t think anyone can refute the fact that this city is far stronger and better than since before he took over." O'Malley, who said he does not plan to run for mayor, called Menino "as much of a Boston landmark as the Boston Garden or the Custom House." He…

Boston Talking About Hosting 2024 Olympic Games

The New England region has a distinct advantage that it could host the winter or summer games.

There hasn't been an Olympic games hosted in America since 1996 in Atlanta, and like leaders at Massachusetts' State House, the Boston City Council will be exploring the feasibility of bringing the games to New England. "Why hasn’t Boston made a serious play for the Olympics?" District 6 City Councilor Matt O'Malley asked during Wednesday's council meeting. "It’s obvisouly a huge undertaking. [...] It could bring peril. [...] The Atlanta Games of 1996 was really run well and turned a profit. [...] Montreal hosted the games in 1976 and it took 30 years for them to pay off a billion dollar budget." He added that Vancouver had debt problems after hosting the games, too. O'Malley said he doesn't want to rush the process but that there is …
