Mayor Tom Menino and Gov. Deval Patrick are asking people to honor the Boston Marathon bombing victims exactly one week after the tragic events.
The city of Boston and communities throughout Massachusetts are being asked to join in a moment of silence on Monday at 2:50 p.m.—the time the two bombs went off, within about 10 seconds of one another, near the finish line of the 117th annual Boston Marathon. The minute of silence at 2:50 p.m. will honor the victims and families of those injured and killed by the terrorist attacks. Following the moment of silence, bells throughout Boston and the state will ring, according to a statement from Boston Mayor Tom Menino’s office. “Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Governor Deval L. Mayor doesn't mince words at Spaulding Rehab event.
Boston Mayor Tom Menino didn't mince words when asked about the marathon bombing suspect currently under heavy guard at Beth Israel Hospital after Friday's manhunt. "Who cares," Menino answered reporters when asked about the man's condition. When asked about the condition of the MBTA officer who was injured during Friday's manhunt, Menino was softer in his response. "He’s showing some improvement. It's encouraging to us," he said. The mayor was attending a celebration marking the grand opening of Spaulding Rehabilitation Network's new hospital in the Charlestown Navy Yard Saturday night and spoke to reporters prior to the event. When asked about the events of the past week, Menino said, "This city has never worked more efficiently than it …
The rehabilitation hospital will mark the opening of its new location in the Charlestown Navy Yard—and the spirit of the city—with a special event for staff and officials.
Though a community open house on Sunday was postponed Friday in the midst of a citywide lockdown and manhunt for suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing, Spaulding Rehabilitation Center will go ahead with other plans to celebrate its grand opening in the Charlestown Navy Yard this weekend. Spaulding representatives had planned to hold a small thank you gala for donors, staff and local and state officials Friday night, but the event was canceled. Following Friday’s arrest, an even bigger celebration has been organized for tonight, with a performance by the Boston Pops, speaker Mayor Tom Menino and a “rousing sing-a-long” of “Sweet Caroline”—a special nod to the city’s “Boston Strong” spirit. “I’ve never been more proud to be part of Boston …

District 6 City Councilor Matt O'Malley weighs in on Mayor Thomas Menino's decision to not run for re-election after 20 years in office.
Mayor Thomas Menino, Boston's longest standing mayor, will not run for office this November. As the Hub's mayor for 20 years, he leaves behind a legacy with the city's citizens and with city councilors. District 6 councilor Matt O'Malley, who represents West Roxbury, and has served on the council since 2010, said he was "surprised and saddened" by Menino's decision. "This is a guy who has been the mayor since I was in the eighth grade," he said. "He served with distrinction and honor. I don’t think anyone can refute the fact that this city is far stronger and better than since before he took over." O'Malley, who said he does not plan to run for mayor, called Menino "as much of a Boston landmark as the Boston Garden or the Custom House." He…

The 6th annual St. Patrick's Day weekend street hockey event is taking place today in the Temple Street neighborhood.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is scheduled to attend today's 6th annual Shamrock Shootout in West Roxbury. While Boston Mayor Thomas Menino hasn't declared whether he'll be seeking re-election - the Temple Street area, where the shootout takes place - is a big John Connolly neighborhood. Connolly, an at-large city councilor, announced his mayoral candidacy earlier this month, lives in West Roxbury. Connolly has hammered the Menino administration on the recent student assignment plan, calling it "a lost opportunity for our children". And the Shamrock Shootout will be packed with families with elementary-aged children. The Shamrock Shootout begins at 10:30 a.m. at Temple and Sherbrook streets in West Roxbury. So is this a campaign move for …

The 2013-14 proposals include a bill establishing a gun offender registry and one providing further support for charter schools.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is supporting a renewed focus on education and public safety for the 2013-14 legislative session, he announced Tuesday. During a short press conference attended by state legislators, their aides and others, Menino presented the city’s 2013-14 legislative initiative package, which features 49 bills including 24 new initiatives. “The concentration of those new bills is on the public schools and education and also on public safety,” Menino said. “We were fortunate enough a couple of years ago to get the educational reform bill through, and that gave us some tools to really move some of our schools forward, and we’re going to file another bill on educational reform with Representative [Martha] Walz.” Among the new …

The city-owned building has an elevator, and is closer to Boston City Hall than the Mayor's Hyde Park home.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino hopes to be finally back living at his Hyde Park home in the next 10 days. Menino has been staying at the Parkman House on Beacon Street since being released from Spaulding Rehab on Dec. 23. Menino chose to stay at the city-owned property due to its proximity to Boston City Hall and Spaulding Rehab, while he continues twice a day physical rehabilitation. The Parkman House at 33 Beacon Street has an elevator, which is better for the 70-year-old mayor who is recuperating from a bad back, said Emilee Ellison, Mayor's Office spokesperson. Menino was hospitalized for two months with a combination of ailments from a viral infection, a back fracture, and then discovery of him having Type-2 diabates. But Menino is …

Mayor Thomas Menino met with his Cabinet and is back in City Hall.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is back in City Hall and running the city as he was before being hospitalized for two months. "The Mayor’s doing great. He’s working. He’s been in City Hall a couple times this week to check in with his staff," said John Guilfoil, city spokesman. Menino celebrated his 70th birthday at City Hall on Dec. 27, Guilfoil said. "He was at his Cabinet meeting yesterday (Jan. 2), to see all the Cabinet secretaries. They were all excited to see him. And we’re getting back to normal," added Guilfoil. Menino, who's known for being in the neighborhoods, is not back to running that part of his mayoral routine yet. "The neighborhoods are where he wants to be and he’s very eager to get out there," said Guilfoil. The five-…

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has been hospitalized with several ailments since Oct. 26.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino hopes to be celebrating Christmas at his Hyde Park home, and finally out of the hospital this Sunday. "The Mayor is doing much much better," said John Guilfoil, spokesperson for the Mayor's Office. "He has said he hopes to be home on Sunday. But nothing is certain." Menino has been hospitalized since October 26 after returning early from an anniversary trip with his wife in Italy. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino was in the hospital and now is staying at the Spaulding Rehab Center.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino says that he is still able to do the job he was elected to do, and he hasn't ruled out seeking reelection in 2013. In an interview with the New York Times, Menino spoke while working out at the Spaulding Rehab Center, “My attitude is this. I’ve run for mayor five times now and I’ve won all five times.” “How I explain this is, people have to have faith in you. That’s the key to this whole thing. That was Mitt Romney’s problem — people didn’t believe in him.” When asked whether he thought if he could make people believe in him, and support him after a long hospitalization. “Watch me!” said Menino. Menino has been hospitalized since October 26 after returning early from an anniversary trip with his wife in Italy…
