Bright Days Ahead for Businesses on Centre and Spring Streets

Sixteen entrepreneurs have taken a chance on West Roxbury in the last two years, and their success is a testament to the vitality of our community.

  I have a simple but powerful message: the people of West Roxbury support local business. Since the beginning of 2011, 16 new businesses have opened along Centre and Spring streets - an astounding number considering the current economy. Shop and restaurant owners come to our neighborhood because they know you will shop local. The numbers tell the story: West Roxbury Main Streets is one of 20 Main Streets districts across the City of Boston, and is one of the largest district by area and by number of businesses (more than 200). But we also have the lowest number of vacancies, at 5. Think about that. Resident and Board President of West Roxbury Main Streets Helps Businesses Succeed

Michael Loconto, president of West Roxbury Main Streets board and a resident of West Roxbury since 2003 helps utilize his role in the organization to promote a healthy business district.

In June more than 100 people gathered in the House of Blues on Lansdowne street in Boston and raised more than $21,000 for families dealing with childhood cancer.   “Put the Cuffs on Cancer” and was hosted by both West Roxbury Main Streets and Cops for Kids With Cancer, both nonprofit organizations with strong ties to the community. Michael Loconto, board president of WRMS, said that part of the reason they chose to partner with Cops for Kids With Cancer, was the amount of officers who actually reside in West Roxbury. “The Boston Police are heavily involved,” he said. “[This event] is a link to our community.
