Millennium Park Bird Walk Postponed Due to Extreme Cold in West Roxbury

Mass Audubon and Boston Parks and Recreation Department's first mutual bird walk is postponed today due to extreme cold.

The birds will be at Millennium Park today, but extreme cold has postponed the bird walk organized by Mass Audubon and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. The West Roxbury Patch thermometer at 1 p.m. today lists the temperature as 10-degrees, which would be even colder atop Millennium Park. The bird walk was scheduled for 3:30 p.m. No future date has been set yet.

Unleashed Big Dog Scares Boy Causing Child to Fall, Get Scrapes at Millennium Park

The saga of unleashed dogs continues at Millennium Park. This time an impressionable 4-year-old child fell and got scrapes.

A man told Boston Police that while at Millennium Park an unleashed big dog ran past his 4-year-old son, startling the boy, causing him to fall and get scrapes on his right elbow and right knee.  Around 6:01 p.m. on Oct. 20, the man said while he and his son were playing in the picnic area of the upper field an unleashed big black dog came running towards them. The owner was a white female in her 40s, alleged the father.  The man told police that the dog continued running by after making no contact with his son, according to a Boston Police report. The dog's owner allegedly stopped and apologized to the dad before leaving the park with the canine. Boston EMS was offered to the boy, but the father declined. Previously, there were …

Protected Open Space Tops Developed Land After Recent Conservation

Massachusetts now has 1.25 million acres of protected parks and wildlife habitats. West Roxbury has its fair share, too, especially for an urban neighborhood.

Gov. Deval Patrick announced this week that for the first time, the amount of protected open space in Massachusetts exceeds the amount of developed land. With the Department of Fish and Game's recent $2.5 million acquistion in Plymouth of 94 acres of wildlife habitat, the state can count 100,000 acres of open space conserved since 2007, for a total of 1.25 million acres overall. According to the attached PDF map provided by the City of Boston, West Roxbury looks pretty good for an urban neighborhood when it comes to open space - and protected open space. The Stony Brook Reservation, which the attached Bellevue Hill Reservation is also a part of, in the southeast part of West Roxbury, are protected; As are Millennium Park and Brook Farm, …
