Public Places to Cool Off in the Parkway Area & Boston

Not everything is open yet for the season, but here's where you can head to cool off.

It's hot out and there are several places in the Parkway area you can cool off. Start with the Draper Pool.  Or try the Ohrenberger or Roche family community centers. And one of the best places to cool off for the kids (and parents) is at the Hynes Playground spray tot lot.  The city's outdoor pools - which include the Clougherty Pool in Charlestown and Mirabella Pool in the North End - are scheduled to open today, when temperatures are expected to be around 75. However, all the indoor pools are up and running, a city spokesman said. The cooling centers are also open, and have the air conditioning on, so residents can cool off at the community centers.  Back Bay, Beacon Hill and the South End are without designated pools or cooling …

Photos: Teen Center on Centre Fun

The Roche Family Community Center's Teen Center on Centre held a 'Bring a 5th Grader Day' so kids could see the fun they could have come fall.

Next fall when Parkway-area sixth-graders-to-be are looking for something to do afterschool, try checking out the Teen Center on Centre at the Roche Family Community Center. The TCOC (Teen Center on Centre) is for kids in grades six and older. Said Courtney Losi, of the TCOC, "With the end of the school year approaching, we held a 'Bring a 5th grader' day to let the children see what is available to them come September. It was great! Tons of kids showed up and we had a wonderful time! Losi also sent West Roxbury Patch some pics of TCOC's trip to the Dunkin' Dugout Red Sox game, and teens participating in Boston Shines.  For info about the TCOC call 617-635-5066.

Pat Roche was Driving Force in Creating Roche Family Community Center

Make no mistake, without Pat Roche there would be no Roche Family Community Center in West Roxbury and the recreation facility would have been lost for generations of Parkway kids and families.

To the Editor: It is with great sadness to note the death of Patrick “Pat” Roche of Roche Brothers Supermarkets on May 26. Our condolences are extended to his wife Barbara and the entire Roche family. Pat was a long-time supporter of the Parkway Boys & Girls Club and was one of the two driving forces in the creation of the Roche Family Community Center on Centre Street. The Boys & Girls Club was closed in 1992 due to overwhelming debt and the building was going to be auctioned off by the FDIC in 1996. As chair of the George Robert White Fund, Mayor Thomas M. Menino was very supportive of efforts to save this community asset but there was a need for a strong corporate partner to convert the building to a City-operated Community Center.  …
