Menino Wants Delay on School Assignment Vote

The External Advisory Committee was scheduled to make a recommendation this weekend, but Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has asked them to take more time on their decision.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has asked the External Advisory Committee on Improving School Choice to delay their recommendation on one of three proposals scheduled for this weekend. But he did say he would like the committee's recommendation by the end of February. In a letter written written on Feb. 5 (attached) Menino spoke of the public process, "You are coming to the end of an extremely thoughtful process. To date, there have been over 70 public meetings on improving school choice, and you have heard from 4,000 families." The External Advisory Committee was formed after Menino requested Boston Public Schools Superintendent Carol Johnson to create the group in 2012. The committee offered three student assignment proposals in January. …

Home-based proposal A: This plan would give parents the choice of at least six schools of different quality near their home address.  "…

right now I prefer the home-based plan. All of the zone plans essentially red-lines certain neighborhoods - even this current incarnation. What bugged me about the last round of zone plans was that on all but one or two, the line cut roslindale right in half - essentially lumping the more affluent section with west roxbury and JP, and the up-and-coming section with mattapan. This zone plan seems …   more ›

Improving Boston Public School Choice Online Survey Deadline July 4

Last day to fill out Boston Public Schools online survey about school assignment is July 4.

July 4 is the last day to take the Boston Public Schools online surveys for improving school choice. More than 2,000 people have taken the surveys, according to school officials. Take the survey online here at Bostonschoolchoice.org. Through community meetings since March, schools officials have gathered feedback about school choice, which has been added to the above website, with analysis like this: Participants from Charlestown, Downtown, parts of North Dorchester, the North End, East Boston (in forums) and West Roxbury tended to ask for the ability to choose a school in their neighborhood.
