West Roxbury Goes Solar

This environmentally friendly column is brought to you by West Roxbury Saves Energy, a community-based organization committed to spreading the word that individuals can make positive choices that save money as well as the planet.

Solar energy seems talked about now more than ever, so if you are like us, you may have been wondering whether your house has a roof that makes it possible to tap into this efficient, clean, and less expensive way to get your electricity. Wonder no more! West Roxbury Saves Energy and solar partner Next Step Living want to help you determine whether your roof qualifies as a good candidate for solar panels and, if it does, to encourage you to participate in West Roxbury Goes Solar, a program we launch this month. WRSE asked Boston-based, home-energy leader Next Step Living to use their innovative technology to look at every home in West Roxbury to learn which roofs provide ideal orientation and space for solar panels. Over the upcoming …

Roslindale Leads, While West Roxbury Lags, for Residential Solar Power Program

Through the Solarize Mass-Boston program, 116 contracts were signed to install solar power energy systems across the city's neighborhoods.

Residential solar projects will double after 116 Bostonians signed contracts to install solar projects through Solarize Mass-Boston. Residents and businesses were offered a group buying program designed to increase interest of purchasing solar energy and reduce its cost, due to buying in bulk. The more people signed up, the more prices dropped, with 41 contracts being signed in the last week of the program. Roslindale led the way with 33 contracts signed, followed by Dorchester with 22, and then Jamaica Plain with 21 contracts. All other neighborhoods were in single digit contracts (please see chart below for full breakdown). Boston concluded the four-month program in early November 4, that partnered the City of Boston, the Massachusetts…

Roxbury Latin School Goes Solar Powered

Projected savings in the first year are more than $5,000, with Roxbury Latin expected to save close to $100,000 during the 15-year lease term. When the 15-year lease expires, Roxbury Latin will own the system, and the energy it produces.

The Roxbury Latin School is the oldest independent school in the US, and you don't last that long unless you embrace change. With that in mind, Roxbury Latin installed a solar panel renewable energy system on the roof of the Albert Gordon Field House. Financially, it made sense for Roxbury Latin, said Don Pellegrini, director of buildings and grounds at Roxbury Latin, who was involved in the project from the start. “There is no capital outlay for the school,” Pellegrini said. “Solect provides materials and installation, and we lease to Solect the Gordon Field House roof. We pay Solect directly for the clean energy produced by the panels at a rate 35-percent lower than our utility. It has been a great project for Roxbury Latin.” Hopkinton…

Want Solar Cells on Your West Roxbury Property? Solarize Mass can Help

To date, 21 city residents have enlisted in the program. If you're interested, the deadline to sign up is Sep. 30.

The City of Boston has a green agenda, and you can get in on it through Sept. 30 at little immediate cost - and some West Roxbury residents have already done so. Recently, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino joined 20 other Boston property owners, who had enlisted in the Solarize Mass program, which allows Boston property owners to add solar cells to their roofs with little upfront cost. The way the agreement works, a solar company leases your roof and installs solar cells on it. The company takes responsibility for maintaining the cells themselves and the performance of the whole system. In return, the property owner agrees to purchase — at a special, lower-rate — the power generated by their panels for the next 20 years. Is Solar Energy in Your Future?

This environmentally friendly column is brought to you by West Roxbury Saves Energy, a community-based organization committed to spreading the word that individuals can make positive choices that save money as well as the planet.

OK, so West Roxbury isn’t southern California. We have lots of overcast days. Most winters, there’s snow on the roof for at least a few weeks and rain for a few more weeks. Solar energy isn’t for me, you’re thinking. But think again, and consider this: we have much more sun than Germany, yet Germany has one of the highest solar adoption rates in the world. At an informative presentation this month at the Roche Family Community Center sponsored by Solarize Mass—Boston, West Roxbury residents heard plenty of good reasons to consider saving energy and money by going solar. Adam Korngold — owner of Waves Car Wash and a winner of West Roxbury Saves Energy’s Green Business Award — told the gathering he generates 20% of his electricity needs …

Mayor Menino Announces Boston Solar Rebate Program (Video)

The mayor held the announcement in the front yard of JP's Katharine Kilbourn and Scott Shear, who get 90 percent of their power from solar cells.

On the longest day of the year, the bright sunshine had the electric meter running backwards at Katharine Kilbourn and Scott Shear's house. That's because eight months ago the couple installed a solar array on the roof of their 98 Brookside Ave., Jamaica Plain home. And while the couple says the solar panels are already making economic sense, the city picked their front yard to announce that it will sweeten the pot for other home owners who want to add solar panels. "If you look at our meter now, it's running backwards," said Shear, minutes before Mayor Thomas Menino arrived to announce the program. The new program is part of Renew Boston. It adds a city rebate to incentives already offered by the state and federal governments. The average…

New Boston Solar Program will Help Residents Go Green and Save Money

Average residential rebates expected to range from $1,000 to $3,000, in addition to state and federal incentives, according to city officials.

The Renew Boston’s Residential Solar Pilot program was announced today in hopes of encouraging Boston homeowners to invest in clean renewable energy.  Boston Mayor Thomas Menino announced several facets of the new program, including that Boston Archives Building in West Roxbury is in the design phase of for a 140 kW solar power system.   The program is possible because of a $140,000 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) for small residential solar photovoltaic (PV) installations by providing matching rebates to Massachusetts' Clean Energy Center’s Commonwealth Solar II program. Solar photovoltaic systems are the method that solar power is gathered. Interested in learning more …
