Editor's Notebook: Where Did Lord Mayor Gormley Go??

With rumors flying up and down Centre Street about Richie Gormley's whereabouts, it's best to let the imagination run wild...

Several weeks ago I received a tip from a trusted source - that Lord Mayor Richie Gormley was going to be out of town for a while - and there rumblings about his reign being overthrown. So far, no one has reported any Saroufim tanks rolling down Centre Street. The Mary Mulvey Madness has not made its way from JP to Spring Street. And the Gormley Funeral Home has continued business as usual.  Tom "TD" Dougherty, Gormley's appointed Deputy Mayor, said that Gormley has been away on an "international relations trip" for the last couple of weeks, but could not elaborate more. He said that he and the Lord Mayor have been in constant contact about West Roxbury, while Gormley has been abroad, possibly at a sheep farm in Ireland. TD added he has …

What Can Be Done About Centre Street Parking Issues?

Double parking, speeding, people parking illegally in places that are not spots - what can be done about it?

Yesterday, I posted a photo on West Roxbury Patch's Facebook page showing a car illegally parked on Centre Street at the intersection of Manthorne Road. I parked at the Holy Name Rotary, where there were other open spots. It was about 6 p.m., a busy time on Centre Street. My goal - to find double parkers and illegally parked cars. It took me less than 3 minutes to find this car illegally parked. (The other location I was planning on going to was in front of The Real Deal Deli.) I snapped a couple of photos of the vehicle driven up on the sidewalk - a clear violation of parking laws. (See attached photos.) A woman asked me why I was taking photos of the car. I told her I was writing a story about cars being illegally parked on Centre …

There never seems to be enough handicap parking on Centre St also. I only know of 3 spots, and they are in front of E-5, the West Roxbury library and in front of the medical offices, right across from the new bank going in. So what does the handicapped individual supposed to do; drive around in circles until a a spot opens up. You tell me.   more ›

TD Pledges Votes to Gormley! Nominees Cry Foul!

Tom "TD" Dougherty throws savvy social media team behind the Undertaker. West Roxbury Civic Improvement Association President Olivia Waishek demands investigation. And is Tony Saroufim building a Millennium Park castle??

What started off as a fun poll has turned into a very serious debate with lives (not quite) at stake. So who is the unofficial mayor of West Roxbury? Centre, Spring and even little streets like Bonair, are debating: TD vs. Tony, Gormley vs. Jacobson, and Waishek vs. Hennessey. As the debate swirls like the stir of a cup of Anna's Donuts coffee, reports of thuggery have already besieged the good names of the nominees. One anonymous West Roxbury Patch reader emailed an incident that may or may not have occured. Fearing for his or her morning coffee, the reader will not be identified: This whole thing is like the "Arab Spring" but with more freckles and a bit of Irish step dancing thrown in. Some burly guy with a Scally Cap and a union pin …

Poll: Who is the Unofficial Mayor of West Roxbury?

We all know who the elected mayor is - but who is the unelected mayor? You know, the person who everyone knows, is involved in events and knows the right person to call.

Here's the deal. We all know Mayor Thomas Menino is the elected mayor of Boston. But who is the unofficial mayor of West Roxbury? I've been covering West Roxbury for years and have seen the nominees on election days holding signs, or running neighborhood meetings, often speaking at neighborhood events, organizing neighborhood sport events, or just grabbing some grub and drink at the Corrib, West Roxbury Pub or The Real Deal. The nominees are listed in alphabetical order (on the poll). No elected official such as state Rep. Ed Coppinger (and the Coppinger Clan votes) were allowed to be nominated. Also no former elected officials are in the mix for instance, former West Roxbury District Councilor John Tobin. I selected the nominees after …
