Letter: Thank You from AABA for Unofficial Mayor Donation

The American Arabic Benevolent Association received $2,000 in donations from the unofficial mayor of West Roxbury event.

To the Editor: On behalf of the officers and board members, I wish to extend a thank you to the Patch/AOL for their generous donation of $2,000. Tony Saroufim and myself designated AABA as our favorite charity. The concept of the “election” was great, done in fun, but most important brought the community of West Roxbury together. AABA was established in 1974 and to date, we have accomplished the following: The James M. Salah Family Housing at Cheriton Heights, our 70 unit residence for seniors, is under construction.  Next year, the ribbon will be cut and the doors will be open to provide much needed elderly housing for seniors from all races and religions. The American Arabic Benevolent Association, Inc. stands proud to be Americans and…

It's Official! Richie Gormley is the Mayor of West Roxbury

The votes have been tallied from all around the world, from Dubai to Guam, from Spring Street to Belgrade Avenue - the people have spoken.

After all the campaigning, debating, politicking, and - most important - poll stuffing, Richie Gormley is the mayor of West Roxbury. "It’s an honor and I’m humbled to be elected," said the soft-spoken Gormley, who served in the 1st Marine Division in the Vietnam War, after which he received the "Cross of Gallantry" for combat action.  Long before internet polls, West Roxbury residents called Richie Gormley the mayor of West Roxbury - actually Lord Mayor. So it is only fitting Gormley won West Roxbury Patch's: Who is the Unofficial Mayor of West Roxbury poll.  Gormley took home 2,112 votes (33%), with Mary Mulvey Jacobson receiving 2,032 votes (32%), and Tony Saroufim taking third with 805 votes (12%). In total 6,254 votes were cast for …

TD Pledges Votes to Gormley! Nominees Cry Foul!

Tom "TD" Dougherty throws savvy social media team behind the Undertaker. West Roxbury Civic Improvement Association President Olivia Waishek demands investigation. And is Tony Saroufim building a Millennium Park castle??

What started off as a fun poll has turned into a very serious debate with lives (not quite) at stake. So who is the unofficial mayor of West Roxbury? Centre, Spring and even little streets like Bonair, are debating: TD vs. Tony, Gormley vs. Jacobson, and Waishek vs. Hennessey. As the debate swirls like the stir of a cup of Anna's Donuts coffee, reports of thuggery have already besieged the good names of the nominees. One anonymous West Roxbury Patch reader emailed an incident that may or may not have occured. Fearing for his or her morning coffee, the reader will not be identified: This whole thing is like the "Arab Spring" but with more freckles and a bit of Irish step dancing thrown in. Some burly guy with a Scally Cap and a union pin …

Poll: Who is the Unofficial Mayor of West Roxbury?

We all know who the elected mayor is - but who is the unelected mayor? You know, the person who everyone knows, is involved in events and knows the right person to call.

Here's the deal. We all know Mayor Thomas Menino is the elected mayor of Boston. But who is the unofficial mayor of West Roxbury? I've been covering West Roxbury for years and have seen the nominees on election days holding signs, or running neighborhood meetings, often speaking at neighborhood events, organizing neighborhood sport events, or just grabbing some grub and drink at the Corrib, West Roxbury Pub or The Real Deal. The nominees are listed in alphabetical order (on the poll). No elected official such as state Rep. Ed Coppinger (and the Coppinger Clan votes) were allowed to be nominated. Also no former elected officials are in the mix for instance, former West Roxbury District Councilor John Tobin. I selected the nominees after …
