Top It Off CEO on Women's Workforce Council, Talks Equal Pay

Elizabeth Hoenscheid will work to crush the gender pay gap.

To mark Equal Pay Day on April 9, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino announced the members of his Women’s Workforce Council, including Elizabeth Hoenscheid, CEO of Top It Off, in West Roxbury. "I am delighted and honored to be a part of Mayor Menino’s Women’s Workforce Council. There is a lot of work to be done to realize pay equity, and it’s an honor to be part of a great group of women who are shinning the spotlight on this important issue," said Hoenscheid to Patch. The council will tackle challenges facing Boston’s working women with its first priority to address the wage gap, as Boston seeks to become the first major city to achieve pay equity for women. Council members include women from leaders in engineering, medicine, law, technology …

No doubt many women's pay-equity advocates think employers are greedy and profit-obsessed and would hire only illegal immigrants for their lower labor cost if they could get away with it. Or move their business to a cheap-labor country to save money. Or replace older workers with younger ones for the same reason. So why do these same advocates believe that virtually every employer would NOT hire …   more ›

West Roxbury Business Owners Support Menino's New Forum for Women-Owned Businesses

Kalember Dune's Shirley Walsh, owner of the block of Fairview Corner, thrilled about Mayor's charge for pay equity.

One of the main points of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino's State of the City address was gender equality. Menino announced the forming of "Women on Main”, a new networking forum for women-owned businesses in Boston’s Main Streets districts. Women-owned businesses like the block of Fairview Corner, which touts a row of all women-owned businesses: Kalembar Dune, Top It Off, Fabutique, and BakerBaker. The block is owned by Shirley Walsh, who also owns Kalembar Dune. Menino's speech really struck a chord with Walsh. "As a woman, mother of two daughters, and business owner in Boston, grateful for being educated at one of the premier all-girls public schools in Boston (Girls' Latin School - now sadly demised) I am thrilled by the focus and …

Photos: Fashion Mob Fairview Corner Fashion Show!

Donning Top It Off and Fabutique apparel, models strutted their stuff down Spring Street as West Roxbury made its nightly commute past the sidewalk runway.

Models strutted down a red carpet on Spring Street's sidewalk in Top It Off and Fabutique garb as the 36 bus passed by on Thursday night. Commuters honked horns and rubbernecked to get a glance of the spectacle - the first (and hopefully annual) Fashion Mob Fairview Corner Fashion Show. More than 100 people lined against the commercial stores on the stretch of 162 to 170 Spring Street while trendy tunes from Justin Timberlake, Usher and Rihanna provided the soundtrack. Among the crowd was Raffaella Thomas, "I think it's great. They should have more of these. It gets people to shop." In Thomas' hand was a shopping bag with a newly purchased item from Top It Off inside. "It's better than a dream!" said Shirley Walsh, owner of Kalembar Dune…

Editor's Note: Top It Off Mannequin - The Oddest Thing Ever in My Car

Top It Off donated several auction items for tonight's silent auction, and lent 'Lola' the mannequin to model a Brunswick hat and Big Island scarf.

As an editor I often end up with odd things in my car. Maybe it's freshly picked basil, or an orange cone being used a parking spot saver - but yesterday, for me, I had the oddest thing ever in my car: A dressed up mannequin. The lovely ladies of Top It Off have donated several items for tonight's unofficial mayor of West Roxbury event, which includes a silent auction. Top It Off lent West Roxbury Patch.com a mannequin, nicknamed Lola, who is showing of the silent auction items: a Brunswick hat, Big Island Scarf and $50 gift certificate to Top It Off. Stop by tonight at the Irish Social Club at 7 p.m. when the doors open. A suggested donation is $10 at the door that goes to area Parkway charities.

Top It Off Wins Boston Main Streets Window Contest

Mayor Thomas Menino congratulated Top It Off co-owner Elizabeth Hoenscheid for winning citywide Deck the Windows contest.

Top It Off co-owner Elizabeth Hoenscheid put a shawl on Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. The Mayor smiled and let it be known that he's not the kind of guy who wears red shawls.  Minutes before, Menino awarded first place to Top It Off for winning the Deck the Windows of Boston Main Streets contest. The contest took place in Boston's 18 Main Streets districts, with more than 350 small businesses decorating their windows, with the winner being chosen through an online survey. In a quick ceremony emceed by Janet Wu, Top It Off was crowned the champion of the contest. Hoenscheid received a plaque for the storefront display. She spoke about the window before the ceremony.
