The former Navy SEAL and the longtime Congressman will face off June 25 to fill John Kerry's former U.S. Senate seat.
A political newcomer will face a long-time Massachusetts politician in the race to be the Bay State's next U.S. senator. The Associated Press has declared Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset and Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey of Malden the winners of their U.S. Senate special primary elections, according to tweets from Fox 25. The call for Gomez came approximately one hour after the polls closed in the statewide primary while a call for Markey came moments later. Other candidates still looking to get on the ballot, but here’s a look back at the recent happenings in the race for U.S. Senate.
It's been a wild last week or so, as the special election for John Kerry’s U.S. Senate seat continued to take shape. Though many Republican contenders were rumored to jump into the race, so far only three have officially announced their candidacies. Republican State Representative Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk) announced officially on Thursday that he is running for U.S. Senate. Earlier last week, Winslow said he was forming an exploratory committee for the U.S. Senate seat. Winslow represents the 9th Norfolk District, consisting of the towns of Norfolk, Plainville and Wrentham, along with Precincts 3 and 4 in Medfield, Precinct 1 in Millis and Precinct 5 in Walpole. With local Republicans still scrambling to find someone to run in the race for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by John Kerry’s appointment to Secretary of State, we do have some other contenders who have jumped into the fray. And although Republicans still appear to be struggling to find an official candidate, former judge and State Rep. Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk) announced today he is forming an exploratory committee for the U.S. Senate seat. On Monday, Beverly Libertarian Daniel Fishman announced he would attempt to get on the ballot for the U.S. Senate special election. U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch, D-MA, plans to announce he will run for the seat John Kerry is expected to vacate if he confirmed as Secretary of State, according to the Boston Globe. A source told the Globe that Lynch will challenge Congressman Ed Markey, D-Malden for the Democratic primary nomination. Markey recently announced he was running for the seat. Lynch plans to formally announce his plans after Kerry’s expected confirmation. Kerry received a warm welcome during his Thursday, Jan. 24 confirmation hearing with he Senate Foreign Relations Committee and will likely be confirmed, according to the Washington Post.
