Urban Science Academy Student Suspended for Marijuana, Must Attend Counseling & Intervention Center

The following article is based on a Boston Police report, and where charges are mentioned it does not indicate a conviction.

  An Urban Science Academy student found by the Dean of Discpline with a bag of marijuana will be suspended and have to attend the Counsel and Intervention Center. The student was found on Jan. 11 at 8:20 a.m. in the third floor boys bathroom holding a bag of a leafy green substance believed to be marijuana, according to a Boston Police report.

West Roxbury Resident Speaks at Scholarships Announcement

Zazil Merdones, a senior at USA and West Roxbury resident, is an MGH Bicentennial Scholar and will attend Fitchburg State University and will study pre-nursing.

Zazil Merdones, a senior at Urban Science Academy and West Roxbury resident, spoke at the Partners HealthCare college scholarships announcement with Mayor Thomas Menino at Boston City Hall recently. Partners and its founding hospitals, Brigham and Women’s and Massachusetts General Hospitals, announced a $10 million scholarship initiative to support more than 400 Boston area students interested in careers in health and science and participating in the hospital youth achievement programs.  Merdones is a MGH Bicentennial Scholar and will attend Fitchburg State University and will study pre-nursing.

18 BPS Students Awarded Full Tuition Scholarships

West Roxbury Academy, BLS and Urban Science Academy students among recipients.

  Eighteen Boston Public Schools seniors will received full tuition scholarships, including students attending West Roxbury schools. The students were honored on January 5 for being selected to receive Posse Scholarships. Posse Scholarships are full tuition scholarships to 39 participating colleges and universities. Massachusetts First Lady Diane Patrick spoke to the students and Boston Public Schools Superintendent Carol Johnson was also in attendance. In the fall 1,300 students nationwide were nominated.   Each college in the Posse Boston Scholarships selects 10 students so they can enroll as a group, or posse, and support each other on the way to graduation. Gordon's Woods Condominiums Offers Scholarship for USA Senior

Gordon's Woods offering $500 scholarship for Urban Science Academy graduating senior.

  Gordon's Woods condominiums will fund a scholarship for a graduating senior from the Urban Science Academy. The $500 scholarship is for a student pursuing an education in sustainable and renewable resources, which fits with the condos being an Energy-Star certified condominium complex at 990 VFW Parkway. Police Confiscate Pot From Education Complex Student

Police report says Mr. Hilliard -- presumably Urban Science Academy dean of students Walter Hilliard -- recovered two bags of marijuana from student's front pockets.

A West Roxbury Education Complex student couldn't pass the smell test when he brought pot to school last Wednesday. According to police reports, Boston School Police officers responded to a radio call asking that they report to a Mr. Hilliard -- presumably Urban Science Academy Dean of Students Walter Hilliard -- upon arrival. When they did, the officers were told that the Mr. Hilliard had conducted an administrative search on a student amidst complaints of a strong smell of marijuana coming from the suspect. Mr. Hilliard, as the report reads, found two clear bags of what appeared to be marijuana in the student's front pockets. The drugs were brought to the District E-5 drug safe, where the incidents were logged. The report said the …

Urban Science Academy Teacher Finalist for Teacher of the Year Award

USA teacher William Madden-Fuoco "loses" to fellow BPS teacher.

An Urban Science Academy humanities teacher was a finalist for 2012 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year award. William Madden-Fuoco of the Urban Science Academy, said, "I strive to send all students the message that 'even if success is not happening for you now, I will reach for you. This is important, you can do this, and I won't give up on you.'" Madden-Fuoco was one of several teachers honored in a June 16th ceremony held at the Massachusetts State House. Adam William Gray, a 10th grade math teacher at Monument High School in South Boston, was honored at the Massachusetts State House, after being named 2012 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year. Urban Science Academy's William Madden-Fuoco Nominated as 2012 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year

Madden-Fuoco is one of four educators nominated for the award to be announced in June 16th ceremony.

William Madden-Fuoco, a humanities teacher at the Urban Science Academy has been nominated as a finalist for the 2012 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year Madden-Fuoco was one of four Bay State educators selected as finalists for the 2012 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year, who were introduced today by the state’s education commissioner and  lead program underwriter, Hannaford Supermarkets. The finalists were introduced by Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner Mitchell D. Chester and representatives from Hannaford Supermarkets at the Hannaford store in Quincy, Mass.
