Sophia Snow Place independent living has 18 veterans living at its West Roxbury location.
A Tuskegee Airman was among the veterans honored during a "Salute to Our Veterans" event at Sophia Snow Place. George Giddings and his wife, Ethel, now live at Sophia Snow Place in West Roxbury, and were actually among the first 12 residents to put a down payment on moving into the independent living facility before it was built. But well before they moved to West Roxbury, George was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, a popular name for the first African-American pilots in US military history. They flew during World War II. Geddings was a student at Fisk University and enlisted in the US Air Corps after breakout of the war. It's a very small thing to say "thank you," but it means so much. We reserve November 11 each year as our time to say thank to the veterans who served our country over the years. The day, which commemorates the armistice that ended World War I, is the rare holiday not sullied by commercialism. It's a quiet day of reflection for those who deserve all the thanks you can give, even if they refuse to ask for it. Do you have a veteran in your life? Take a moment to publicly thank them here. Photographer Mike Flynn took these photos of the the Rolling Thunder MA Chapter 1 POW-MIA Memorial Dedication with US Senator Scott Brown on Veterans Day at The Gardens at Gethsemane. Rolling Thunder, MA Chapter 1 met at Millennium Park at 2:45 p.m. and rode their motorcycles down the VFW Parkway to Baker Street, reaching Gethsemane, to dedicate a bench and boulder with a black granite plaque inserted, calling attention to POW-MIA (prisoner of war and missing in action) issues. The dedication of the reflecting park began at 3 p.m., next to the Garden of Honor Veterans area at the cemetery. Joe D'Entremont, president of MA Chapter 1, invited all motorcycle riders to join them.

Three Veterans Day events in the neighborhood, plus plenty of discounts for veterans. Thank the men and women who served, and who are currently serving our country.
West Roxbury is the place to be on Veterans Day, with several events planned for Friday. The German Centre for Extended Care will dedicate their Wall of Honor. This is a pictorial and narrative exhibit of members of the Deutsches Altenheim community who served in the Armed Forces of the US. Refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m. and the dedication is scheduled from 10:30 to 11 a.m. A little bit down the road on Baker Street, you will have the opportunity to see American flags "retired." When our flags become too damaged to respectfully continue to display, there is an established etiquette to follow to reverentially “retire” the flag.
