Q&A: Stephen Smith Reflects on Unofficial Mayor, Neighborhood Council Memories & Red Sox

Stephen Smith was appointed to the West Roxbury Neighborhood Council by Mayor Ray Flynn in 1991.

West Roxbury's Stephen Smith chatted with Patch about the Neighborhood Council, the Red Sox and one of his favorite events - the annual Rosie's Place fundraiser (happening tomorrow in West Roxbury). Patch: You've been on the West Roxbury Neighborhood Council since 1991 - how has the Council changed since that time?  Smith: I don’t know if the Council has changed much since 1991 as our role in terms of hearing issues that come up in West Roxbury still remains the same as it did when I came on to the Council in 1991 Patch: Do you think it's become more active, less active or stayed the same? Smith: I think the level of activity fluctuates as we deal with zoning variances. Things have slowed down in that area which is just reflective of the…

Rox Diner Talks Expanding Hours & Getting a Beer/Wine License

The Rox Diner would like to be operationally in sync with their successful Rox Diner location in Newton, which is open until 10 p.m. and serves beer and wine.

The owners of West Roxbury’s Rox Diner spoke at the West Roxbury Neighborhood Council (WRNC) Tuesdaynight seeking preliminary feedback on wanting to extend their operating hours and obtain a beer and wine license. Owners John Fortin and Paul Lounderback came with their legal representative Anthony Ross to speak on their behalf at the District E-5 Police Station. Presently, the West Roxbury establishment is open until 3 p.m. and they are in the early stages of applying for an extension of operating hours. If approved, they would close at 9 p.m.  “For those not familiar with Rox Diner, there’s going to be no bar,” said Ross.” “This is a restaurant. We’re talking about serving beer and wine strictly with meals.” Fortin's and Louderback's …

West Roxbury YMCA Renovations Making Headway

YMCA District Vice President Marion Kelly and West Roxbury YMCA Board of Advisors Chairman Jim Hennigan shared updated floor plans for the new YMCA site.

After years of planning, the much anticipated West Roxbury Branch YMCA renovations are closer to breaking ground. YMCA District Vice President Marion Kelly and Board of Advisors Chairman Jim Hennigan shared their updated plans during the West Roxbury Neighborhood Council meeting at the District E-5 Police Station’s Community Room. “We came up with a new design that had more usable space within the existing footprint of the building,” said Kelly on Tuesday night. YMCA’s present 22,000 square foot facility will almost double to 39,000 square feet. Kelly and Hennigan took a moment to walk the council through the detailed floor plans. The purchases of the old post office on Centre Street and the Boston Aid to the Blind building added new …

Alliance: Neighborhood Groups 'Know How to Fight'

Would-be developers face neighborhood-level challenges before they can even deal with the city.

Opening a new business in Boston can be a challenge. Not only do would-be business owners have to deal with state and city codes, requirements and laws, but — before they do so — they have to garner the favor of a sometimes-complex maze of neighborhood groups. In West Roxbury, it is no secret that it is often in a developer or business owner's best interest to present their new project to the local neighborhood group.  Take the case of Rob Rivard. Rivard decided that he wanted to open a new Domino’s Pizza on Main Street in Charlestown and brought his case to a hearing of a subcommittee of the Charlestown Neighborhood Council. Residents at the meeting voiced strong opposition to the project. A few days later, the council voted to not …

Vietnamese Sandwich Shop Coming to West Roxbury's Centre Street This Month

Van Tang and Tu Vu, a married couple from Lexington, Mass, announced plans to open a take-out Vietnamese sandwich shop 1759 Centre St.

Centre Street, once known for mainly hosting banks, is now beginning to attract a variety of new restaurants to the main stretch of West Roxbury. Van Tang and Tu Vu, a married couple from Lexington, came before the West Roxbury Neighborhood Council yesterday evening at the Area E-5 Police Station to introduce their new restaurant Bánh Mi Ngon. Given that it was the only item on the agenda, it was a very short and light meeting. The establishment will be a take-out Vietnamese sandwich and appetizer shop located at 1759 Centre Street, near Christo’s Pizza. They were inspired by their friend Le, owner of Le’s Vietnamese Restaurant in Chestnut Hill’s Atrium Mall, to consider West Roxbury. Le has been in business for more than 15 years. “I …

Restaurant News from Taste of West Roxbury and More

Restauranteurs weren't only dishing out food, they were also dishing out plans for new locations, restaurant features and more.

Dishing dishes of fish is not on everyone's wishlist. But sometimes fish is what folks prefer, when it comes to West Roxbury food fare. Meat and potatoes, and vegetarian options are great, too. Oh, what the hey, put it all in one place, and let me choose.   Loose lips in the food business do not sink ships, in fact, it's quite the opposite, as having a buzz about your bistro, pizza place, or cafe, is wonderful to any owner's ears. At West Roxbury Main Streets' 1st annual Taste of West Roxbury, not only were folks talking about how spectacular and enjoyable the event was - still while eating - but the restauranteurs were dishing on their menus, locations and more. While Al Wadi's Executive Chef Walid Massad served hummus, grape leaves, …

Residents Want West Roxbury to Remain Intact After City Council Redistricting

Residents discussed Boston City Council redistricting at Tuesday night's West Roxbury Neighborhood Council.

Last night's West Roxbury Neighborhood Council meeting was well attended with residents concerned about the Boston City Council redistricting process. The concern regards several proposed redistricting maps that would take a a small part of West Roxbury, specifically Ward 20, Precinct 3, and move it into District 5. The neighborhood would still remain a part of West Roxbury, but would be represented by the District 5 city councilor (Rob Consalvo) instead of District 6's city councilor. Boston City Council's Committee on Census and Redistricting chaired by Councilor Bill Linehan introduced the original redistricting plan taking off a portion of West Roxbury and adding it to the Hyde Park/Roslindale district. Ward 20, Precinct 3 is on …

Poll: Who is the Unofficial Mayor of West Roxbury?

We all know who the elected mayor is - but who is the unelected mayor? You know, the person who everyone knows, is involved in events and knows the right person to call.

Here's the deal. We all know Mayor Thomas Menino is the elected mayor of Boston. But who is the unofficial mayor of West Roxbury? I've been covering West Roxbury for years and have seen the nominees on election days holding signs, or running neighborhood meetings, often speaking at neighborhood events, organizing neighborhood sport events, or just grabbing some grub and drink at the Corrib, West Roxbury Pub or The Real Deal. The nominees are listed in alphabetical order (on the poll). No elected official such as state Rep. Ed Coppinger (and the Coppinger Clan votes) were allowed to be nominated. Also no former elected officials are in the mix for instance, former West Roxbury District Councilor John Tobin. I selected the nominees after …
