Men and women ages 30 to 65, who have never been diagnosed with cancer, are needed for a cancer research study.
The American Cancer Society is looking for volunteers for a grassroots cancer research project taking place at the West Roxbury YMCA on May 2. Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65, who have never been personally diagnosed with cancer are needed to join the American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-3. To pre-register or to learn more, visit cancer.org/cps3ne or call 1-888-604-5888. Walk-ins are welcome at West Roxbury's YMCA on Bellevue Street. The event on May 2 is from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Enrolling in the study takes less than 30 minutes. Students are participating in an eight-week internship program and will hear from a panel of business owners.
The West Roxbury YMCA is looking for business adults to participate in a Teen Internship Round Table. The round table is scheduled for Wed., March 20, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. or so. The only requirement from the panelists is to prepare a brief history on themselves, their business and how they got where they are. The end portion of the program will be for questions from the teens. To the Editor: The West Roxbury YMCA thanks the Parkway Running Club for their generous donation to the West Roxbury YMCA’s Annual Fund. The funds were raised, by through the annual Walter’s Run, a 5K road race held in honor of Walter Burgess. The funds were presented to chair person of the YMCA Board, Jim Hennigan and vice-chairperson Mary Mulvey-Jacobson by Louis Falcone, Cindy Gillian and Erin Dunne of the Parkway Running club. The YMCA partners with the Parkway Running Club each year to accommodate Walter’s Run participants before and after the race. A West Roxbury man told Boston Police he believes three of his credit cards were lifted from his wallet while at the West Roxbury YMCA. The victim said somewhere between 6:15 and 7 p.m. on Jan. 21 that his American Express, Chase and First Republic credit cards were stolen from his wallet, according to a Boston Police report. He said all three cards were used at the Target store in Watertown for a total of $1500. The victim had notified the Watertown Police Department, who advised him to file a report with the Boston Police, and Watertown will also investigate.

Lance Armstrong admitted to doping throughout of his Tour de France wins, but that doesn't mean he still isn't a cancer survivor.
Lance Armstrong finally admitted that he used illegal drugs to help him win a record number of Tour de Frances. And while he is a cheater, he has founded the Livestrong organization that has helped many cancer survivors at the West Roxbury YMCA. “Lance Armstrong first and foremost, as far as this foundation goes, is a cancer survivor,” said Janice O’Connor, the West Roxbury YMCA's Health and Wellness Director to WBZ-TV. “The foundation is still going strong. It’s still helping people. Livestrong at the YMCA, here at the West Roxbury YMCA, we will continue to run this program. We stand by it. Grant to help fund CDC’s Moving For Better Balance Falls Prevention Program.
The West Roxbury YMCA is one of three Massachusetts Ys to receive CDC funding to add “Moving For Better Balance, Falls Prevention Program” to their existing Active Older Adults offerings. While current programming focuses on helping older adults better their flexibility and strength, this balance program will greatly enhance the overall offerings that the Y brings to the community. More than 25% of the residents of West Roxbury are older than 60, according to City of Boston statistics. Active Older Adults programming at the West Roxbury Y provides the elder community with strength and flexibility classes, as well as welcome social opportunities.
