West Roxbury YMCA Wishes Dr. Seuss a Happy Birthday

A Seussical good time was held in honor of the author's birthday.

  Editor's note: The following was written by Becky Peluso of the YMCA. On Sunday, March 4, 2012 the West Roxbury YMCA gymnasium was transformed into a Seussical Birthday Extravaganza. Children of all ages were invited to join the Y in celebrating the life of Dr. Seuss, in honor of "The Lorax" book. The decorations on the wall included Dr. Seuss characters, streamers, balloons and a giant Cat in the Hat to name a few. All those who entered were able to receive and wear with pride a splendiferous Dr. Seuss hat. The visitors to the party included members, after school participants, small fry participants and community members. Local Families, Businesses Come Out for Healthy Kids Day at West Roxbury YMCA

Event offered information and activities to promote healthy living.

With childhood obesity and chronic illness making the news on a seemingly nightly basis, local families, businesses, and the West Roxbury YMCA came together on Saturday morning to promote wellness and healthy living as part of the Y's national event, Healthy Kids Day. "We're offering a free event for parents to come down and get excited to be healthy and learn to be healthy," said West Roxbury YMCA Program Director Tyler Simpson at the event's onset. "We got in touch with as many local businesses as we could to help us promote healthy living." The event featured tables for businesses and organizations to hand out informational pamphlets and healthy living accessories. Faulkner Hospital, for instance, had a table staffed by dietrician …

The West Roxbury YMCA Encourages Families to Play Their Way to Health

On Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to noon, the West Roxbury YMCA invites families throughout the community to come to Healthy Kids Day for a play date.

Lifestyles that include regular physical activity and healthy eating can lower kids’ chances of becoming obese or overweight and developing chronic diseases. As a leading nonprofit strengthening community through healthy living, the West Roxbury YMCA believes that getting kids more active and allowing them to play leads to a healthier lifestyle. We know that many parents struggle to find the time and resources to incorporate physical activity and healthy habits into their kids’ daily routine. So, we are holding YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day to celebrate and teach good health for kids, encourage active play and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity. West Roxbury YMCA Honored by Boston City Council

City Councilors John Connolly and Matt O'Malley offered a resolution recognizing the West Roxbury Y for providing opportunities and programming for children on the autism spectrum.

Today At-Large Boston City Councilor John Connolly  and West Roxbury District Councilor Matt O’Malley presented Marion Kelly, Executive Director of the West Roxbury YMCA and Mary Carew-Lyons, a volunteer at the Y, a resolution recognizing the West Roxbury YMCA for providing opportunities and programming for children on the autism spectrum. April is Autism Awareness Month.

Letter to the Editor: YMCA is a Great Non-Profit in West Roxbury

YMCA helped current employee overcame childhood anger issues and did his homework thanks to the Y.

When my mother and I moved to Boston in 1994 we experienced many hardships. One that I would like to focus on that helped shape the man that I am today was that we were homeless for about two to three years. As a child it was very hard for me to understand why this was happening to me and why no one was helping. This led to anger and disappointment which manifested into anger management issues. When I started school these issues made it hard for me to make friends and do well academically. While in elementary school my mother enrolled me in the YMCA afterschool program. I didn’t know what to expect and was very hesitant. My anger problems were still an issue at the program but the director did not give up on me, instead she would talk to …

What an inspiring story! Congratulations to you on your accomplishments. It's so refreshing to hear about these positive experiences in the community. My daughter has attended the West Roxbury YMCA and I have spent time with the running club there. I am so grateful for the affordable, community-centered programming that I have found there.
