It doesn't matter what happens every morning, I know if I have a large cup of coffee, and my West Roxbury Patch, the morning is going to go well. Thanks, WR Patch. You give me what we need to catapult our day towards success!

Without question, the fettuccine Alfredo at Tony's Place on Spring Street. Or, you could relocate Post 390 from Boston to Centre Street!

I was at Barnes & Noble yesterday and re-energized my commitment to read at least 1 solid book a week in the New Year. I'm going to start with 50 Shades of Grey Bedding so I Make More Time for ME in 2013!

I hope appliance manufacturers also get on-board and make home ovens, refrigerators, and the like GENDER-NEUTRAL as well (since, at this address, I seem to be the only person who knows how to operate these oh-so-difficult appliances!) I learned how to bake in an Easy Bake Oven a gazillion years ago and hundreds of cup cake bake sales later, I have to send McKenna Pope a 'woo hoo!' for her efforts. A big thump on the head that Hasbro hasn't change the toy oven color to 'white' or 'brushed gray' yet, think of how sales would soar!

The West Roxbury fire station and the Area E-5 policestation tours are, without question, two of the BEST 'free' field trips that school children and/or Scouts can do that not only 'teaches', but stimulates young minds into thinking about not only their safety, but THEIR future career aspirations. In the 13 years we have done the fire station tour, our Cub Scouts met Two Sox the cat twice, but they were fleeting moments as Two Sox is a VERY busy fire station worker! It makes me smile wide to think about the interesting dinner conversation had by those Happy Day parents when their preschoolers arrived home after this field trip--these are days the kids never forget. Kudos to Engine 30 for making such memories for these little ones!

Do I not have enough caffeine surging through my veins this morning that my logic is off? I just can't seem to wrap my head around the hefty price--in this economy? Isn't it decorative enough to do the large balsam wreaths and big red bows per light pole? There are street lights up and down Centre so it's not as if the wreaths aren't visible. Wreaths and bows (for an 18" back metal ring) would cost about $8 per pole annually (not including the City cost to get them up via cherry picker truck). I'm not a Christmas crank--if my spouse would allow it we'd have a decorated tree in our living room year-round. I just have to question whether $400 a pop is really prudent. No, it's not my money but this just feels excessive; $14,000 is a fabulous windfall and could go quite far during a holiday season. I'm not sayin'... I'm just sayin'.... less is more.

I'm thankful that my husband and sons are healthy (thank you Harvard Vanguard for keeping us on the straight and narrow and reminding us when we forget immunizations, physicals, and the like!) I'm grateful for food to feed my family and pets; friends who tolerate my ups and downs, birds who come to entertain our cats every morning so they leave me to work on what I need to get done. VERY grateful for a family that enjoys sleeping late so I can listen to NPR uninterrupted. Life is good... today and every day.

  • On the article Supermarket Showdown: How Does Roche Bros Compare to Other Markets?

Roche's absolutely has the corner market on community generosity bar none. The staff is pleasant and plentiful but when I need technical advice (doing a dinner or party for 50-200 people, I gotta go with my neighborhood catering-on-a-budget posse for all things 'good cooking but economical'... Shaw's uber-butcher "Chuck" and produce professionals "Carol" and "Corey". They can tell you what to that will 'wow' your guests where they feel like they're "getting their own baby chicken on their own baby plate with a side endive salad" but it's not going to cost. When we can do a full fall harvest dinner for ~$2.10 a person shopping at Shaw's, I gotta go with the deals (with an edge on 'da-lish') in this economy.

Thinking about what was and what could have been had this never happened. To ensure our youth never forget... the Troop 3 Dedham Boy Scouts put together 50 full toiletry kits in patriotic fabric bags donated by a parent and delivered them yesterday to the VA Hospital on Route 1. Each included a card that read, "Please accept this small kit as our fall community service project as we honor those lost and attempt to reclaim that spirit of unity that followed this awful day in American History. We thank you kindly for your service to our Country. Troop 3 Dedham Boy Scouts." People can say what they wish but until there is 'danger music' in real life, a great Scouting program is still a terrific way to learn priceless life skills.
