West Roxbury Residents Share Mixed Reactions to New Stop Signs

West Roxbury residents speak out about new stop signs.

Stop signs were installed at the intersection of Joyce Kilmer Road and Glenhaven Road on Monday and West Roxbury residents have mixed reactions to the new additions.

While some feel the signs are not needed, others in the neighborhood hope they slow down speeding cars.

“I don't think there has been a single accident at this T intersection (it isn't even two roads intersecting)," Mark M, a West Roxbury reader posted on Patch. "At the maximum they should have only placed one stop sign on Glenhaven going into Joyce Kilmer. There is no need for the drivers on Joyce Kilmer to have to stop going both ways. This is complete overkill…”

Many agreed with Mark including reader Mike Clifford who believes the signs along with others new ones in the area are a waste of the city's money.

"Recently four stop signs were installed on Bellevue Street," Clifford posted on Patch. "In the 27 years I've lived here I have seen only two accidents on this street; both were caused by cars coming out of side streets. "The signs on Bellevue St do nothing but waste our tax dollars and cause more wear and tear on our vehicles' brake systems."

The City of Boston Transportation Department said the signs were installed at the request of the community for the purpose of improving traffic and pedestrian safety in the area.

The city said the installation of the new signs would ensure that vehicles come to a complete stop at all approaches to the intersection.

Jennifer Marie, a resident of Glenhaven Road said speeding is an issue in the area.

“I live on this street and I fear coming out of my driveway in the morning,” she said.

Brenda Doogan Norton , believes the signs are needed but should be put in a different area of Glenhaven Road.

“They should really put one on Glenhaven Road itself,” Norton said. “Maybe at Paragon Road and Glenhaven Road. I can't believe Glenhaven Road itself has been overlooked. Cars use that street as a cut through all day long to beat the lights on Centre St and Baker Street. The mornings and evenings are the worst.”

The city also posted additional signs, warning drivers that they must stop ahead  so vehicles are aware of the new signs.
