Preview: Evening Garden Club of West Roxbury Tour

The self-guided tour entitled 'We're Flowering in West Roxbury features six residential gardens, as well as three public sites. Gardens are awesome!

 

This year's Evening Garden Club of West Roxbury's annual self-guided garden tour “We’re Flowering in West Roxbury” is on Saturday.

Flora, fauna, green, gold and glowing, will all be on display. From a cottage-style garden, to an award-winning English country romantic escape -- the featured residential gardens offer an array of leafy loveliness, native and exotic flora, and design motifs.

“These are gardens that will capture your imagination and get your inner green thumb stirring,” said Ann Poulopoulos, a long-time club member, and current president and tour chair. “You’ll also see practical solutions to gardening challenges, such as an alternative to high-maintenance lawns and incorporating art into the landscape.”  

The tour is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the tour features six unique residential gardens, as well as three public sites, including the West Roxbury Library Reading Garden. Tour tickets are $15 in advance, or $18 if purchased on the day of the tour and are available at three Centre Street businesses:  Maria Lisa Bridal & Boutique, and Picture This. Tickets can also be purchased at the West Roxbury Public Library and other tour sites on the day of the tour. Raffle tickets are also being sold that include Red Sox tickets donated by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

Featured on the tour along with the library's Reading Garden, are the Tiffany Studios' acclaimed "Landscape Triptych" stained-glass windows at the Theodore Parker Church, and an outdoor classroom garden at the Patrick Lyndon School.

Proceeds from tour and raffle tickets benefit the Garden Club’s four signature civic beautification projects: plantings at the West Roxbury Public Library; the West Roxbury Parkway entrance to Allandale Woods Urban Wild; the Mass DOT Visibility site at Route 1 and Caledonian Avenue; as well as the ongoing work with children and educators at the Beethoven School.

The Evening Garden Club of West Roxbury will be operating a table at the West Roxbury Library displaying the 30+ raffle prizes donated by West Roxbury businesses and residents.

“Support from the business community has been impressive," said Poulopoulos. “They appreciate our club’s role in keeping the community beautiful."
